Event Details

Interested in enriching your soil? This demonstration could be for you.

'Terra Preta', meaning black earth, is a highly fertile, man-made soil specific to the Amazon region created approximately 7000 years ago by the indigenous Amazonian populations by mixing fermented organic material with biochar (charcoal). This addition not only improves degraded soils by enriching them with nutrients, but also helps to improve their structure, water-holding capacity, and ability to resist erosion.

In this demonstration, local compost enthusiast, Tapper G, will take you through all the necessary steps, from anaerobic fermentation to making charcoal, to make your very own terra preta whilst giving a second life to everyday items.
