What does it mean to be human — and truly alive — in the 21st century?
Inspired by the work of Pina Bausch, this contemporary dance piece explores memory, identity, gender, and connection through movement, theatrical play, and humour. The work drifts back to adolescence — that tender, chaotic time of becoming — where emotions are oversized, bodies feel unfamiliar, and embarrassment is never far away.
Relationships unfold and unravel to tango-influenced music by a local composer: intimate, tense, romantic, and quietly absurd. A rug becomes a central object and shifting landscape — a place of comfort, conflict, hiding, and revelation — used to express feelings that words struggle to hold. Themes of neurodiversity surface subtly, through repetition, miscommunication, and the search for belonging.
Balancing vulnerability with wit, the piece embraces awkwardness as a shared human experience. It is a dance about learning how to be with others, remembering who we were, and questioning who we are now. And just when things feel most exposed… there may also be pirates.
