Event Details

“Tales of the Snow Leopard” depicts snow leopard and traditional community conservation in Hemis National Park, Ladakh, India. Told largely by Ladakhis, and compiled by Philomène Verlaan and the Park’s snow leopard rangers, Khenrab Phuntsog and Smanla Tsering, the Tales illustrate daily life of Ladakhis and snow leopards in the Park. Collecting the Tales was tremendous fun for all humans involved, sparking much laughter and unexpected insights.

The collecting stories link the Tales. They 1) support conservation in the Park 2) contribute to the natural and cultural history of the snow leopard; 3) preserve Ladakhi traditional stories and songs at risk of being lost; and 4) show how their human and non-human populations approach living together sustainably and peacefully.

"Taming the Dragon: Development and Change in Sumdha, Ladakh", a documentary by Tales contributor Sir Robert ffolkes Bt OBE and Namgyal Thankthong, is screened, featuring Park villages and Ladakhi Tales contributors.
