Based on Martin Amis's novel, The Zone of Interest refers to the restricted zone around Auschwitz where the film is mainly located, especially the house and gardens where Kommandant Höss and family lived an 'idyllic' existence, yet within earshot and sight of the brutal prison blocks behind the wall. The 'banality of evil' has seldom been more starkly portrayed. But the message is also chillingly contemporary.
As Jonathan Glazer said at the Oscars: “....All our choices we made to reflect and confront us in the present....Not to say ‘look what they did then’ — rather, ‘look what we do now.’"
